Francie Lyshak

Francie Lyshak, b. 1948, studied art in Paris, Detroit and NYC culminating in a master’s degree from Pratt Institute. Her painting career began in the 1980s as a young feminist in the East Village where she was a part of a community of anti-establishment artists, musicians and writers that included David Wojnarowicz, Peter Hujar, Gary Indiana, Bill Rice, and John Lurie.

Lyshak is concerned with the examination and representation of internal experience. In her evolving practice, she has sought to continue this examination while reaching beyond the personal nature of such a quest.  She creates paintings that provide a setting for the viewer to engage in the universal experience that is known as self-examination, meditation or mindfulness practice. Guided by raw intuition and a limited palette, she explores the effect of hue, tone, line and brushwork which lends a sense of mood and dynamism to each work. The resulting monochrome paintings, purposely devoid of peripheral details and narrative, are abstractions of an exterior or interior space which depict an expansive, undefined space for the eyes. Each painting is an open field, a place to wander in an atmosphere that is filled with color and ambiguity.

She has exhibited extensively in the New York area, and her paintings have been selected for juried exhibitions by numerous artists and curators, including Alice Neel, Patterson Sims and Paulina Pobocha of MOMA. In addition to being the recipient of a number of awards and honors, her work is held in private collections in the United States and Great Britain.
